So lucky me got to spend a long weekend over Valentines Day in Austria with Matt. We were fortunate that Valentines Day fell on a Sunday, but unfortunately weren’t together to celebrate his birthday (guess we will have to go somewhere cool next year since he’s turning 30 😳). Anyway, we planned a long weekend in a town in Austria called Alpbach “the most beautiful town in Europe” (this is a real thing…it won an award!). This tiny little ski village is in the middle of the Austrian Alps, and really is beautiful, and really small.
We spend our weekend in a castle made into a hotel called Schloss Matzen Castle, which only held 18 rooms that were absolutely gorgeous and HUGE!!
The hotel was very romantic and charming, and we had a lovely hostess and the restaurant was excellent – the chef came out and made sure your order would be a meal you would enjoy!
On Saturday morning, we were supposed to go paragliding, but there was a storm at the top of the mountains creating too much wind and snow to go paragliding that weekend. We decided to walk into the nearby town and explore the shops and cafes (and bakeries!)
We went for dinner in the small ski village of Alpbach, best knownfor their flowers across the village in the Spring/Summer. But at night you could see why this village is known as the most beautiful in the country!
On Sunday we woke up early to have a nice morning start to a long day of skiing! The mountains were much steeper and actually had powder (us New Englanders typically ski on ice!) So this was quite a treat to have a nice mountain with actual powder! The views were breathtaking from the top of the mountain!
The skiing was incredible matched with stunning views of the Alps! It is definitely a place where Matt and I would love to return to. Everyone was so friendly and welcoming, although some didn’t speak English (I made use of my Spanish on this trip which I was not expecting!) I wish we had a longer stay here so we could have explored more of the ski villages and tried out other mountains and outdoor activities, but I guess that’s all the more reasons to return!!
